KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Strong safety Eric Berry’s return to the starting lineup remains in limbo.
The Chiefs list Berry, who suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2, as out for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers.
Berry practiced Monday and Wednesday, but missed the past two days.
“He tried it the other day,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday. “He couldn’t go. I mean, he’s trying his heart out to get this thing, get it right, and it’s just not feeling right, so we backed off.”
Ron Parker will start his fourth straight game in place of Berry. Parker currently ranks second on the team with 26 tackles (24 solo).
The Chiefs also list cornerback Chris Owens (knee) as out. Reid declined to say who would assume the primary nickel role between rookie cornerback Phillip Gaines (concussion) and cornerback Jamell Fleming.
Gaines is listed as probable and he practiced fully the entire week.
Meanwhile, running back Cyrus Gray (hand) returned to practice Friday after missing the past two days. The Chiefs list Gray as questionable.
The Chiefs also list cornerback Sean Smith (groin) as questionable. Smith put in a full practice for two straight days, so he’ll likely play.
The Chargers list xx on the final injury report with cornerback Brandon Flowers (groin) as questionable.
Flowers returned to a limited practice Friday after missing the past two days.
