KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs punched their ticket Saturday for the AFC Divisional Round, and Sunday night they found out when they might play next — but who remains to be determined.
The Pittsburgh Steelers visit the Buffalo Bills Monday in their postponed Wild Card game, and the winner will determine the opponent, time, date and location of Kansas City’s next postseason game.
If Buffalo beats Pittsburgh, the Chiefs will visit the Bills at 5:30 p.m. central time on Sunday, Jan. 21. The game will air on CBS.
If Pittsburgh beats Buffalo, the Chiefs will host the Houston Texans at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20 with the game airing on ABC/ESPN.
The winner of the Bill-Steelers game will plan on Sunday, ensuring that the team will have five days of rest between games. If the Chiefs face the Bills, Kansas City will have had seven days of recovery.
If the Chiefs host the Texans, both teams will have the same number of days of recovery since both played in the Wild Card round on Saturday.
The Baltimore Ravens, which had a bye this weekend, will host the lower-seeded team next weekend. If Buffalo wins, Houston will play the Ravens on Saturday. A Pittsburgh win means the club would play the Ravens on Sunday.
The NFC schedule is less complicated. The No. 7 seed Green Bay Packers upset the Dallas Cowboys 48-3 earlier Sunday, setting up a meeting with the San Francisco 49ers at 7 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20 on FOX. The winner of Monday’s Philadelphia Eagles at Tampa Bay Buccaneers contest will face Detroit at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 21 on NBC.
If the Chiefs were to visit Buffalo in the Divisional Round next weekend, it would be their first AFC playoff game on the road after 14 consecutive home games. The Chiefs won 10 of those games, including the last four and nine of their last 10. Patrick Mahomes has never played a road AFC playoff game in his career.
The last Kansas City true road playoff game came at the end of the 2015 season when Kansas City fell to New England 27-20 in the Divisional Round.
The Chiefs did play the Buccaneers in their home stadium in Super Bowl LV but it is still considered a neutral field.
