Full Thursday Practice Puts Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Track to Return vs. Buffalo

Full Thursday Practice Puts Clyde Edwards-Helaire on Track to Return vs. Buffalo

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay did not practice Thursday after his arrest Wednesday night, putting his status for Sunday’s AFC Divisional Round game against Buffalo in doubt.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo says he’ll defer a decision on Gay to head coach Andy Reid, who will speak to reporters on Friday.

“I’m sure he’ll address it but if this happened in a game and it was an injury — today we just operated that way,” Spagnuolo said. “But we’ll see what happens.”

Two other players were added to the injury report Thursday. Linebacker Anthony Hitchens (back) and backup offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho were both limited participants. It’s not immediately clear if this injuries arose during Thursday’s workout.

Running back Darrel Williams (toe) and cornerback Rashad Fenton (back) also did not practice Thursday. Reid indicted earlier this week that both players were showing improvement. The club hopes rest will improve the possibility of both players playing this weekend. Friday’s practice will be a test for both Williams and Fenton.

The best news on the team’s injury front came with Clyde Edwards-Helaire listed as a full participant Thursday. It’s the first time he’s practiced on back-to-back days since injury his shoulder in Week 16 against Pittsburgh. Taking part in Thursday’s padded practice was viewed as a key milestone in his recovery. That puts him on track to play against the Bills on Sunday barring no other setbacks.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said Edwards-Helaire is doing everything he can to get back on the field.

“But we’re going to let the proper people take care of that,” Bieniemy said. “Make sure the training staff is handling all that, and I think if it goes well, he’ll do whatever he can to help us if that’s the case. So, when it’s all said and done with, the training room will take care of that.”

Buffalo defensive end Mario Addison (shoulder) was limited on Thursday and remains the only player on the Bills’ injury report.
