KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston sat out practice with the team Wednesday, with swelling on his left knee where Houston had offseason surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament.

Coach Andy Reid said the team just wants to back off on work for Houston. He called the problem common for players recovering from injuries similar to the All Pro linebacker’s

“He’s got some swelling on his knee,” Reid said. “We’ll get that taken care of. We don’t think it’s big thing. This kind of comes with the territory of where he’s at in the whole recovery part of this.”

Cornerback Phillip Gaines, also returning from a torn ACL last season, continues to battle swelling in his knee. Gaines also sat out practice after being inactive for Sunday’s loss against the Tennessee Titans.

Linebacker Tamba Hali sat out Wednesday’s practice as part of his regular work schedule.

The Denver Broncos provided an extra day of rest for a number of veteran players Wednesday. The team also has three players in the league’s concussion protocol with safety T.J. Ward joining tight ends A.J. Derby and Virgil Green.
