DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah Placed on Injured Reserve, Chiefs Sign Two Free Agents

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah Placed on Injured Reserve, Chiefs Sign Two Free Agents

Matt Derrick August 18, 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Former first-round edge rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah landed on season-ending injury reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in Friday night’s preseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

“Felix strained that hamstring, most likely he’s going to go on IR here, so this evening or this afternoon,” Coach Andy Reid said Monday before the team’s practice.

The Chiefs signed new additions on Monday, defensive end Owen Carney and linebacker Xander Mueller. Carney took part in training camp with the Chiefs last season, and Mueller is an undrafted free agent from Northwestern. The club also waived running back Elijah Young to make space for the new additions.

The league modified the injured reserve rules to allow teams to place up to two players on that list during the roster reduction to 53 players on Aug. 26. If a player is placed on injured reserve before the roster deadline, that player is ineligible to return during the season. If the Chiefs had waited until next week to place Anudike-Uzomah on the list, they could designate him to return.

“Yeah, that’s a tough thing,” Reid said. “I mean, that he’s worked hard, so we’ll see where it goes. I don’t, I can’t tell you how long it’s going to be, but any time for that, it was disappointing for him. I know because he works so stinking hard.

Several other players who exited Friday’s game with injuries did not practice on Monday. That list includes cornerback Nazeeh Johnson (shoulder strain), defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott (ankle sprain), linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee bone bruise), cornerback Nohl Williams (concussion protocol), and safety Mike Edwards (hamstring strain).

Wide receiver Jalen Royals also sat out practice with knee tendinitis.

Wide receiver Hollywood Brown, who sustained an ankle injury during training camp, was expected to take part in Monday afternoon’s workout.

“Hollywood did a little work yesterday, which was good,” Reid said. “He’ll get a little bit more today, and then we’ll just see, we’ll see how he progresses through this thing. But he wants — it’s not a matter of wanting to be out there. He wants to do it. It’s just taking it slow so we don’t want any setbacks with this thing going forward here.”

The 26-year-old Carney returns to the Chiefs after a stint with the club during last year’s training camp. He played in two preseason games while picking up two tackles. The 2022 undrafted free agent from Illinois also spent time with Cincinnati during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Mueller, a 2025 undrafted free agent from Northwestern, played in 45 games for the Wildcats over the past four seasons, totalling 146 solo tackles and 273 combined tackles, including a career-best 110 in 2023. He also had 26 tackles for a loss along with nine sacks, six interceptions, and 14 passes broken up.
