KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs on Tuesday announced the activation of rookie defensive back Sanders Commings from injured reserve.
Commings, the team’s fifth-round pick out of Georgia, suffered a broken collarbone during training camp.
The Chiefs placed him on injured reserve before the start of the regular season with a designation to return.
Prior to the activation, Chiefs general manager John Dorsey hinted the move was coming.
“From all indications are he’s made some really nice strides for the last couple of weeks,” Dorsey said of Commings during an impromptu Tuesday sit down with four reporters. “He’s physically held up, he’s moved around athletically. That decision will come sooner than later. In all likelihood, it will probably happen.”
Dorsey said Commings has versatility to play various positions in the secondary.
“I think it’s a combination that he kind of gives to you in terms of being able to play safety, corner and special teams,” Dorsey said. “He gives you a little bit more speed, gives you a little more length and size, adds to the length and size that we currently have.”
To make room for Commings, the team waived rookie safety Bradley McDougald.
McDougald originally joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Kanas. He spent three weeks on the practice squad, appeared in one game on special teams, been active for one game but did not play and was a game-day inactive for four other games.
