Week 6: Wednesday injury report

Herbie Teope October 9, 2013

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs list 11 players on Week Six’s initial NFL Injury Report.

But the big news of the day kicked off Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s media session when it was revealed rookie tight end Travis Kelce (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday.

Kelce has been dealing with a knee injury since training camp and hasn’t played a regular season game. The Chiefs ruled him out for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders and Kelce’s season could be in jeopardy.

“I think anytime you have knee surgery, there’s that chance,” Chiefs head trainer Rick Burkholder said. “We’ll keep advising (general manager) John (Dorsey) and Coach (Andy Reid) on his progress to see what they want to do.”

Reid indicated the team will evaluate Kelce before determining if injured reserve is an option.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Reid responded when asked by a reporter if the Chiefs planned to place Kelce on injured reserve. “We don’t have to do anything right this minute.”

Meanwhile, not practicing on Wednesday are running back Jamaal Charles (toes), tight end Anthony Fasano (ankle, knee), linebacker Justin Houston (concussion) and safety Kendrick Lewis (ankle).

Reid said Charles continues to battle blisters and the team will rest the star running back in order for assist in the recovery process.

“That’s a tough thing to deal with,” Reid said of Charles’ blisters. “He went through the walk through, but we’re probably going to sit him for practice until those things calm down a little bit.”

The Chiefs are also taking it easy on Houston as he goes through the concussion protocols.

“He’s going through all of that protocol and so far he’s been cleared of any signs of that,” Reid said. “That’s a plus, but we’re taking him through that whole protocol on that and just making sure.”

Listed as limited participants for Wednesday’s practice are wide receiver Donnie Avery (shoulder) and punter Dustin Colquitt (knee).

Guard Jeff Allen (groin), right tackle Eric Fisher (concussion), tight end Sean McGrath (knee), offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz (tricep) and fullback Anthony Sherman (knee) practiced fully.

Fisher returns to the field after missing Week Five recovering from a concussion suffered in Week Four.
