LT Josh Simmons, WR Tyquan Thornton Join Growing Injury Report at Chiefs’ Training Camp

LT Josh Simmons, WR Tyquan Thornton Join Growing Injury Report at Chiefs’ Training Camp

Matt Derrick August 18, 2026

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The athletic trainer and the rehab tents at Chiefs’ training camp had steady business Tuesday morning, with eight players starting the day on the sidelines, two players leaving practice early, and others taking off their pads for rest and rehab mid-practice.

Defensive end Ashton Gillottee (foot) and wide receiver Tyquan Thornton (hamstring) both exited practice early on Tuesday. Each left practice in the front seat of a cart after brief evaluations with athletic trainers. The team did not provide any initial information on the severity of the injuries.

The Chiefs started the day with eight players not participating in practice. Left tackle Josh Simmons (back) was the newest addition to the injury report with a back issue. It’s not expected to be a long-term issue. Simmons was last seen on the field Monday working as the third-team left tackle after a string of injuries depleted KC’s reserves on the end of the line. By the finish of Monday’s practice, the only healthy offensive tackles on the field were Simmons, Jaylon Moore, Kahlil Benson and Ethan Driskell. All four tackles took additional snaps on Monday due to the injuries.

Linebacker Jack Cochrane (knee), offensive lineman Matt Waletzko (knee) and wide receiver Jeff Weimer (hamstring) were new additions to the injury list on Monday. Offensive tackle Esa Pole left Monday’s practice due to dehydration, but returned to work Tuesday.

Right guard Trey Smith, who remains sidelined with a back issue, is nearing a return after the team breaks camp, Coach Andy Reid said Monday.

“Yeah, Trey’s doing good,” Reid said. “We’ll see. He’s getting close, so we’ll see where it goes. I don’t know if you’ll see him this week, but he’s getting close.”

Linebacker Drue Tranquill (back), safety Chamarri Conner (knee) and cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) were each back in pads Tuesday morning after missing practice plus Saturday’s preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams with injuries.

The complete Chiefs’ injury report as of the end of Tuesday’s practice:

  • WR Tyquan Thornton (hamstring)
  • WR Jimmy Holiday (quad)
  • WR Jeff Weimer (hamstring)
  • RG Trey Smith (hip)
  • LT Josh Simmons (back)
  • OT Chukwuebuka Godrick (ankle)
  • OG/OT Matt Waletzko (knee)
  • LB Jack Cochrane (knee)
  • DE Ashton Gillotte (foot)
  • DT Omarr Norman-Lott (knee/physically unable to perform list)

Tranquill, Conner and Sneed were limited in Tuesday’s practice.
