KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Trey Smith is doubtful for the Chiefs’ Monday night contest at home against the Washington Commanders, said coach Andy Reid on Saturday, after the right guard missed his third practice this week due to back spasms.
“He didn’t practice today, low back spasms,” Reid said after Saturday’s practice. “We’ll list him as doubtful. We’ll just see how he does here.”
If Smith can’t play Monday night, the starting role at right guard falls to Mike Caliendo, who filled in for Smith midway through last week’s win against the Las Vegas Raiders and practiced this week as the starter at right guard.
Smith’s absence would also require the club to elevate an offensive lineman from the practice squad to ensure a full complement of eight linemen on the game-day roster. Guard C.J. Hansen is the likely elevation from the practice squad as a backup, along with tackle Wanya Morris and center/guard Hunter Nourzad from the active roster.
“I’m not going to get into that right now, but we got enough guys,” Reid said about the practice squad elevation. “I haven’t talked to (General Manager Brett) Veach. So I’ll get with him with it.
The Chiefs will also be without left tackle Josh Simmons, who remains away from the club due to personal reasons. Jaylon Moore will start his third game in place of Simmons at left tackle.
Running back Kareem Hunt (ankle/knee) and cornerback Jaylen Watson (back) are both expected to play despite missing practice time earlier in the week. Both players were full participants on Friday.
The Chiefs are also expected to elevate a defensive lineman from the practice squad for Monday’s game after defensive tackle Omarr Norman-Lott landed on injured reserve earlier this week due to a torn ACL. The prime candidates are Marlon Tuipulotu and Brodric Martin.
Commanders coach Dan Quinn on Saturday said wide receivers Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel are expected to play Monday night. McLaurin missed the last four games with a quad injury, while Samuel missed Sunday’s game with a heel injury.
“Terry and Deebo both have had good weeks, and, man, we’re excited to get them back on the field,” Quinn said.
