Kadarius Toney, Justyn Ross Inactive for Chiefs vs. Dolphins in Wild Card Round

Kadarius Toney, Justyn Ross Inactive for Chiefs vs. Dolphins in Wild Card Round

Matt Derrick January 13, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wide receivers Kadarius Toney and Justyn Ross won’t play in Kansas City’s Wild Card game against the Miami Dolphins after their inclusion on the team’s inactive list.

Toney (hip/ankle) and Ross (hamstring) were listed as questionable on Thursday’s injury report and were expected to be game-time decisions. That leaves the Chiefs with five active receivers for Saturday’s playoff game: Rashee Rice, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman and Richie James. Rice (hamstring) and Valdes-Scantling (oblique) were full participants in practice this week.

Rookie defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah was a surprise inclusion on the inactive list as a healthy scratch. Veteran Malik Herring will take his place on the game-day roster.

The Chiefs complete inactive list for Saturday against Miami:

  • LT Wanya Morris
  • WR Justyn Ross
  • WR Kadarius Toney
  • DE DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah
  • DE BJ Thompson
  • DT Neil Farrell
  • CB Keith Taylor

Kansas City elevated Taylor and defensive tackle Mike Pennel from the practice squad Saturday afternoon. Taylor is inactive but Pennel will play.

Donovan Smith is expected to start at left tackle after a four-game absence due to a neck stinger. Morris, who filled in for Smith, remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol and was already ruled out for today’s game. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor tweaked his knee last week against the Los Angeles Chargers but will start Sunday.

Backing up the offensive line tonight will be swing tackle Lucas Niang, interior lineman Nick Allegretti and guard Mike Caliendo.

The Dolphins are without a plethora of starters that go beyond their inactive list. Starting cornerback Xavien Howard and safety Jevon Holland are on the inactive list. This week the Dolphins placed linebackers Andrew Van Ginkel, Jerome Baker and Cameron Good on injured reserve. They signed linebackers Melvin Ingram, Justin Houston and Bruce Irvin to their active roster in their place.

The trio on injured reserve also joined linebacker Bradley Chubb. Ingram, signed to the team’s practice squad Dec. 14, is listed as a starter at outside linebacker opposite Emmanual Ogbah, who played for the Chiefs in 2019.

The Dolphins complete inactive list:

  • CB Xavien Howard
  • S Jevon Holland
  • QB Skylar Thompson (emergency third quarterback)
  • WR Robbie Chosen
  • TE Tyler Kroft
  • OT Kion Smith
  • CB Cam Smith

Wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (ankle) was limited in practice this week and was questionable for tonight but will play, as will Tyreek Hill (ankle/quad) who was also limited this week.

Running back Raheem Mostert (knee/ankle) was also questionable but will play and backup starter De’Von Achane.
