KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With injuries to starting linebackers Nick Bolton and Willie Gay, the Chiefs turned to a familiar face Tuesday for reinforcements, signing Darius Harris of the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad.
Harris joined the Chiefs an undrafted free agent from Middle Tennessee State in 2019 and spent parts of four seasons with the club. He spent the 2019 season on the non-football injury list while recovering from shoulder surgery stemming from a college injury. During the past three seasons with the Chiefs, Harris played in 28 games with six starts tallying 58 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two broken-up passes.
He played in all three of the team’s postseason games a year ago, including Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles in which he picked up a tackle. Harris was also a significant special teams contributor a year ago and has played 290 special teams snaps in his career.
His return comes as the Chiefs are dealing with a series of injuries at the linebacker position. The club placed Bolton on injured reserve Saturday due to dislocated wrist and Gay exited Sunday’s game with a tailbone injury. Drue Tranquill also left Sunday’s game with an undisclosed injury but returned after one snap.
Harris initially signed with the Raiders in August but was released with an injury settlement. He signed with the team’s practice squad on Oct. 24.
The Chiefs also released linebacker Isaiah Moore from the practice squad with an injury designation.
