Chiefs DT Tershawn Wharton Starts Training Camp on PUP List

Chiefs DT Tershawn Wharton Starts Training Camp on PUP List

Matt Derrick July 18, 2023

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs defensive tackle Tershaw Wharton will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, and there’s a chance starting running back Isiah Pacheco may join him when veterans report later this week.

Wharton did not participate in the team’s offseason program. He suffered a torn ACL in the team’s Week 5 win over Las Vegas and finished the season on injured reserve.

There’s also the possibility that Pacheco may land on the PUP list starting training camp. Pacheco underwent surgery on his shoulder and hand during the offseason. He also did not participate in the team’s offseason program.

Head coach Andy Reid said a decision will be made after Pacheco’s receives his physical later this week. He doesn’t expect Pacheco’s recovery to affect his availability for the season opener against the Detroit Lions.

“I think we’ll have enough time,” Reid said. “Let’s see how this all goes. Curious to talk to him, I haven’t seen him yet, and likewise (Vice President of Sports Medicine and Performance) Rick (Burkholder) is going to talk to him.”

While Reid said Wharton and Pacheco were the only two players on the injury right now, he did not provide an injury update on other players who missed time during offseason workouts and the mandatory minicamp in June. That list includes cornerbacks Trent McDuffie (fibula) and L’Jarius Sneed (knee), right guard Trey Smith (pectoral), safety Mike Edwards (hamstring) and tight end Blake Bell (appendectomy)
