Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Says Ankle “Feeling Pretty Good” at Wednesday’s Practice

Matt Derrick October 9, 2019

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Even after an absorbing four sacks and eight quarterback hits while getting stepping on by an offensive lineman in Sunday night's loss to the Colts, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said his left ankle felt “pretty good” Wednesday as he and his team began preparations to host the Houston Texans.

“It was sore after the game, but it's feeling pretty good today,” Mahomes said. “I'm glad to be able to go out there and practice on it and get it moving around. I feel like I'll be fine playing and moving around and still doing what I need to do to win.”

Mahomes practiced in full on Wednesday, showing no lingering affects from the nagging ankle injury he suffered in Week 1 and re-aggravated on Sunday night.

“It's not perfect, I guess you would day that, but it's good enough I feel like I can run, cut, cut off of it and do all that type of stuff.”

Whether Mahomes sees reinforcements coming into the beleaguered offensive lineup remains to be seen. While wide receiver Tyreek Hill again worked in a limited role in his return from sternoclavicular dislocation, it remains uncertain if he will return to action this week. It's an uncommon injury in the NFL, head coach Andy Reid says, and his return depends on the comfort level of both the player and the club's medical and athletic training staff.

“He's out there working, whether it's scout team or with the guys, he kind of did a little bit of everything last week,” Reid said. “This is pure how he feels. This isn't a real common industry in the NFL. We're just trying to make sure it's right and our medical people.”

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins didn't practice on Wednesday. He played just two snaps against the Colts before exiting with a hamstring injury he initially suffered in practice Friday.

“He felt good going into the game and then when he planted it grabbed on him,” Reid said. “He went through all the warmups, he did everything, felt really good. Felt good on Saturday. One of those things, sometimes that happens.”

Defensive tackle Chris Jones (groin), left tackle Eric Fisher (groin), left guard Andrew Wylie (ankle) and linebacker Dorian O'Daniel (hamstring) also did not practice Wednesday. Jones appears likely to miss several weeks with a groin strain, while Wylie expects to miss one to two weeks with an sprained ankle.

Linebacker Anthony Hitchens left Sunday's game with a groin injury, but he practiced in a limited role on Wednesday. Defensive end Alex Okafor (hip) was a late scratch Sunday but was a full practice participant.
