Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins Suffers Setback in Recovery from Foot Injury

Matt Derrick December 7, 2018

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins tweaked his injured right foot in practice on Thursday, a setback that expects to sideline him for Sunday's game against Baltimore and perhaps beyond.

“He tweaked his foot yesterday, had an MRI on it and that part was OK,” head coach Andy Reid said following Friday's final tuneup for the Ravens. “But he did tweak it yesterday at practice. I'd tell you he's probably going to be doubtful for this game.”

Watkins appeared on field during stretching alongside his teammates during the portion of Thursday's practice open to the media. Reid added that Watkins injured his foot making a push off, similar to the setback he suffered in Week 11 when he left the game against the Los Angeles Rams after just five snaps.

Watkins first injured his right foot in the Week 9 contest against the Cleveland Browns. He went to the sideline for trainers to exam his foot, then briefly return to the game. He played just the five snaps against the Rams in the Chiefs' last three games over the past month.

The 25 year-old Watkins signed a three-year, $48 million free agent contract with the Chiefs during the offseason, and appeared on pace for his best season since 2015. Watkins caught 40 passes for 519 yards and three touchdowns playing in 10 of the team's 12 games so far this season.

The Chiefs officially added free agent wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin to the fold Friday morning, but he does not expect to play against Baltimore on Sunday. The Chiefs expect to line up with Demarcus Robinson filling in for Watkins alongside Tyreek Hill and Chris Conley with Marcus Kemp and Gehrig Dieter also in the rotation.
