KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The conclusion of the Chiefs' season in Sunday night's AFC Championship solidified their draft position in the 2019 NFL draft, awarding the club the No. 29 overall selection in the first round and each subsequent round.
The Chiefs finished the regular season with a 12-4 record, while the NFC runner-up New Orleans Saints finished at 13-3. That gives the Chiefs the No. 29 position, with the Saints claiming No. 30. The final two selections go to the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams, with the Super Bowl loser drafting No. 31 and the winner holding the No. 32 position.
The official draft order for all seven rounds including compensatory selections should be released by the league in late February. OverTheCap.com projects the Chiefs to nab a sixth-round compensatory pick for losing free agent Terrance Mitchell to the Cleveland Browns.
The Chiefs made three trades which affect their 2019 draft haul, but still maintain seven selections in the draft. Kansas City received a second-round choice from the Los Angeles Rams as part of the Marcus Peters trade, which gives them three selections during the first two rounds of the draft. The pick from the Rams will be either the No. 63 or 64 selection depending on the results of the Super Bowl.
The club sent a 2019 conditional fourth-round selection to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for linebacker Reggie Ragland. The Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers swapped conditional seventh-round selections in exchange for wide receiver Rod Streater. That deal enables the Chiefs swap positions with the 49ers, moving from the No. 29 spot in the round to the No. 2 position.
