Tyreek Hill Suffers Quad Contusion in Training Camp Practice Collision

Matt Derrick July 30, 2019

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs fans and players held their collective breaths Tuesday morning after a hard-hitting play left star wide receiver Tyreek Hill on the ground at practice, but the club's worst fears were averted with the diagnosis of a quad contusion.

It remains unknown how much, if any, training camp time Hill could miss with the injury.

The injury occurred during full team drills when Hill ran an out pattern from the left slot toward the sideline. As the pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes arrived, cornerback Bashaud Breeland pulled off his receiver to make a play on the ball. Neither player appeared to see the other, colliding at full speed. The Chiefs worked in full pads for the second day of camp on Tuesday, and the sound of the impact echoed across the practice fields at Missouri Western State University.

Hill remained on the ground for several moments before limping off the field with the club's head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder. The team's medial staff examined Hill's right leg for a few moments before he took a cart back to the locker room for further examination.

Breeland did not appear to suffer any ill effects of the contact and remained at practice. Today was the cornerback's first day back back in the lineup after suffering a thumb laceration on Saturday.

Chiefs linebacker Reggie Ragland expressed optimism Hill would return to practice quickly.

“Anytime you got the best playmaker in the NFL go down, it scares you a little bit,” Ragland said. “But me knowing Tyreek, that's one of my good friends off the field, so I know he's very tough. He's going to get up, walk it off, and I'm pretty sure we're going to see him tomorrow out here practicing.”

The Chiefs have a quick 10-10-10 practice schedule on Wednesday before taking their first day off of training camp on Thursday.
