No Surgery Planned for Chiefs S Eric Berry on Problematic Heel

INDIANAPOLIS — A painful and bothersome right heel limited Chiefs safety Eric Berry to just three games during the 2018 campaign, but the 30-year-old veteran defender doesn't plan to have offseason surgery, head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday.

"I think it's all positive," Reid said during a discussion at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "He didn't have to have surgery, that's kind of where it's at."

But Reid said even without surgery, he doesn't expect a repeat of last season when Berry missed the team's first 13 games before playing in parts of three of the team's final five contests over the course of the end of the regular season and the playoffs.

General manager Brett Veach said last month that Berry visited Green Bay for further evaluation. That's the home base for foot and ankle specialist Robert Anderson, who performed surgery on Berry's ruptured Achilles in his left ankle during the 2017 season.

"He went and got it looked at — he didn't not do that," Reid said. "He's just taking care of business with offseason stuff."

Reid also said right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (fractured fibula and ankle ligament damage) and safety Armani Watts (groin) continuing recovering from their season-ending injuries and should return for the club's offseason program.

"Both of those two are in good shape heading into the offseason," Reid said. "That should be a real positive for us with both of them."
