Injured Chiefs RB Damien Williams Missing “Quite a Bit,” Says Andy Reid

Matt Derrick August 4, 2019

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs running back Damien Williams missed his fifth-straight practice on Saturday with a hamstring injury, and head coach Andy Reid expressed disappointment his expected starter in the backfield has missed so much of training camp.

“He missed quite a bit, missed a lot of plays,” Reid said. “It's been great for these other guys though.”

The biggest benefactor from the absence of Williams is veteran back Carlos Hyde. Hyde continues running as the first back up with the No. 1 offense, sharing primary duties with Darrel Williams. Reid said he's pleased with what he's seen from Hyde so far.

“Carlos has done a nice job,” Reid said. “He's getting a lot of reps, and he's taking advantage of them.

Safety Jordan Lucas, who also suffered a hamstring strain on July 28 along with Williams, also remains on the sidelines. Wide receiver Gehrig Dieter missed practice as well with back spasms.

Linebacker Damien Wilson joined the injury list on Saturday with a sore knee – “we're just looking at that,” Reid said. Rookie cornerback Rashad Fenton also did not practice Saturday, but the team did not disclose the reason.
