KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes put in a full day's work at practice Wednesday, his left ankle heavily taped after rolling his ankle in Sunday's win over Jacksonville, and he downplayed any lingering effects in preparation for this week's trip to Oakland.
“If you've played sports, you've had ankle injuries before, so right when it happened I knew what it was,” Mahomes said before practice Wednesday. “But I was glad I was able to get back out there and finish the game and excited about the progress I've had so far.”
The Chiefs listed Mahomes as a full participant on Wednesday, and the quarterback said he was excited to get on the practice field and test the ankle out.
“It's feeling better every single day,” Mahomes said. “That's the biggest thing. That first day after was a little sore, but since then the swelling has gone down and I'm able to move around a little bit better.”
Mahomes said he didn't believe the injury limited the throws he could make, but he did avoid scrambling as much as he's accustomed to do because of his limited mobility.
“I was more in the pocket, but I felt like during the while game I kind of was like that anyways,” Mahomes said. “There might have been a time or two I might have scrambled out instead of getting tackled or dumping to the flat. But other than that I felt like I was pretty good with here I was at.”
The Chiefs listed two other starters on Wednesday's injury report. Defensive end Frank Clark (neck) and safety Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder) were both full participants. Only wide receiver Tyreek Hill sat out practice on Wednesday, and the club already ruled him out suffering a sternoclavicular dislocation in Week 1.
The Oakland Raiders face a more daunting injury report heading into this weekend. The team placed starting safety Jonathan Abram in season-ending injury reserved with a torn rotator cuff. Starting right guard Gabe Jackson also won't play as he returns from an MCL injury sustained during training camp.
Starting left guard Richie Incognito also won't play while serving the second game of a two-game suspension for a violation of the league's personal conduct policy. Former Chiefs offensive linemen Jordan Devey is starting in his place.
Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said he's not allowing the losses affect the team's game plan early in the season.
“You got to replace guys in this league, it's pro football,” Gruden said. “They're going to have to play without Tyreek Hill, and we're going to have to play with who's available. It's early in the season, so early, and so many of these guys have not planned much in the preseason as you know. Whoever's available, the best guys will play.”
The club is more optimistic cornerback Gareon Conley will play Sunday despite exiting Monday night's game against Denver with a neck injury. Conley received medical attention on the field following a conclusion and was carted off the field on a stretcher.
