ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Chiefs secondary practiced without their top two safeties on Tuesday, one due to injury and another for a day of rest.

The injury to safety Daniel Sorensen appears the more significant of the team’s recent camp injuries. Head coach Andy Reid said Sorensen injured his knee.

“He’s being evaluated, we’re just going to see here exactly where that thing’s going,” Reid said.

Third-year safety Eric Murray and rookie Armani Watts started with the first-team defense with both Sorensen and Eric  Berry on the sidelines. The Chiefs have limited Berry’s reps in his return from last year’s Achilles rupture.

“We gave him a day off today, again that’s just all part of this recovery thing,” Reid said.

Receiver Sammy Watkins also sat out practice after injuring his hip on Monday. Tight end Tim Wright missed practice with an illness.

Four other player missed Tuesday’s workout. They include running back Charcandrick West (concussion), safety Leon McQuay (hamstring), cornerback Keith Reaser (quad) and offensive lineman Dillon Gordon (shoulder).

Linebackers Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland started with the first-team defense at inside linebacker. Both players have missed practice time with knee issues. They shared first-team reps with

Tuesday’s practice marked the final tuneup for the team’s first preseason game on Thursday against the Houston Texans.
