Reid: ‘It’s an understatement how important the quarterback position is’

Screen grab of Chiefs coach Andy Reid’s Thursday guest spot

Chiefs coach Andy Reid made a Thursday evening appearance on Time Warner Cable Metro Sports to discuss a variety of subjects with sports anchor Dave Stewart.

The interview included Reid’s transition to Kansas City, the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine and his trust in general manager John Dorsey and the team’s scouting department.

Still, considering the Chiefs went 23-41 during the disastrous Scott Pioli-Matt Cassel era, what most want to hear are Reid’s thoughts surrounding the quarterback position.

He didn’t disappoint starting at the 2:50 all the way to the 6:49 mark.

Some tidbits from Reid in the YouTube.com video, which isn’t posted on the regional sports network’s website:

On having the right quarterback (3:25 mark): “It’s an understatement how important the quarterback position is. We’ve got to address that issue and we’re doing that as we go through the guys that are here.”

On skills his quarterback must have (4:10): “The skill that’s most important is he wins football games. That’s a bold statement, but what you see with the quarterback position is the great ones make everybody around them better. That’s what they do.”

On thoughts of a game manager (5:20): “The quarterback is an extension of whoever that offensive coach is, his head coach, whoever that is, that quarterback’s that and he’s got to be that on the field. He has to be in charge in this offense.”

On Combine, quarterbacks and pro days (6:10): “We understand you’ll have to go out and visit players. We’re going to do that and talk to them.”
