Chiefs tie franchise record with ninth-straight regular season road win

Chiefs tie franchise record with ninth-straight regular season road win

Matt Derrick October 9, 2017

The Kansas City Chiefs played rotten house guests once again, knocking off the Houston Texans 42-34 for their ninth-straight road, tying a franchise record and putting the club within reach of moving up the league record books for road success.

The Chiefs last lost on the road in week four of the 2016 season, a 43-14 bludgeoning at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since then, the Chiefs have won 15 of their last 18 games, with all three losses coming at Arrowhead Stadium.

Among the Chiefs’ wins over the last nine road games are wins against both of last year’s Super Bowl teams and four wins over AFC West opponents:

  1. 2016: Week 6 at Oakland, 26-10
  2. Week 8 at Indianapolis, 30-14
  3. Week 10 at Carolina, 20-17
  4. Week 12 at Denver, 30-27 in overtime
  5. Week 13 at Atlanta, 21-13
  6. Week 17 at San Diego, 37-27
  7. 2017: Week 1 at New England, 42-27
  8. Week 3 at Los Angeles Chargers, 24-10
  9. Week 5 at Houston, 42-34

The Chiefs chance to extend the streak to 10 games comes in two weeks. That’s when the team travels west to visit the Oakland Raiders for a Thursday night game. The Raiders dropped their third-straight game Sunday, a 30-17 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Oakland hosts the Chargers next week, while the Chiefs play the Steelers at Arrowhead.

The 1966-67 Chiefs also won nine-straight regular season games. The 1966 club went a perfect 7-0 on the road, then the 1967 team won their first two road games.

Including postseason games, the 1966-67 teams won 10 straight road games. The 1966 team beat Buffalo 31-7 to win the AFL Championship. That team played in what would be called Super Bowl I, falling to Green Bay 35-10 on a neutral field.

The nine-game winning streak ties for the 14th-longest regular-season road winning streak in league history. There have been 26 regular-season winning streaks of at least nine games, and the Chiefs franchise owns two of those streaks.

The 1988-1990 San Francisco 49ers own the NFL record with 18-straight road wins. The New England Patriots hold the AFC record with 12 straight wins in the 2006-2008 seasons.

Including playoff games, the 49ers streak runs 19 road wins. The 1966-67 Chiefs team holds the AFC record for longest winning streak in true road games including playoffs at 10. The Patriots lost at Indianapolis in the 2006 AFC Championship Game during the 12-game regular season win streak. Four teams have posted 11-game winning streaks in true road games including playoffs.
