Alex Smith wins AFC offensive award for week one win

Matt Derrick September 13, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith delivered a nearly flawless performance in his team’s 42-27 dismantling of the New England Patriots, capturing AFC offensive player of the week honors for week one.

Smith completed 28 of 35 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns against the Patriots defense, compiling a quarterback rating of 148.6.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith won AFC offensive player of the week honors for his week one performance in the Chiefs’ 42-27 win over the New England Patriots.

It’s the second offensive player of the week award in Smith’s career. He captured the NFL award in week eight of the 2012 season. He completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns in 24-3 win over Arizona.

Smith joins Chiefs quarterbacks Joe Montana in 1993 and Steve Bono in 1995 as winners of the weekly AFC offensive award in the season’s first week. All three, coincidentally, came to Kansas City via trades with San Francisco.

Tyreek Hill last captured the conference offensive player of the week award for the Chiefs last season. He won for his week 12 performance against Denver.
