Chiefs acquire LB Reggie Ragland, release LB Josh Mauga

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made another move to bolster their depth at inside linebacker, acquiring Reggie Ragland from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2019 draft.

The team released linebacker Josh Mauga to clear roster space for Ragland.

Buffalo selected the 6-1, 247-pound Ragland with the 10th selection of the second round in the 2016 draft from Alabama.

Ragland missed his entire rookie season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained during a preseason practice last August.

He earned unanimous All-American honors at Alabama in 2015 in leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship that season. He picked up 102 total tackles as a senior including 6 1/2 for a loss along with 2 1/2 sacks. He also broke up seven passes and forced two fumbles.

The trade marks the second move Veach since assuming the GM role at improving the team’s inside linebacker depth. Last month he acquired linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis in exchange for linebacker D.J. Alexander.

In addition to the fourth-round pick in 2019, the Bills also hold Kansas City’s No. 1 selection in the 2018 draft. The Chiefs sent that pick to Buffalo in exchange for the No. 10 pick in this year’s draft. The team used that selection on Patrick Mahomes.
