Generosity pulls reluctant Eric Berry into spotlight

Generosity pulls reluctant Eric Berry into spotlight

Matt Derrick June 13, 2017

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A not-so-random act of kindness from Eric Berry put a spotlight on the Chiefs safety thanks to a Facebook post gone viral.

Berry recently attended an event in Knoxville, Tenn., where he attended college. He noticed three homeless persons on the street and approached them, asking them if they were hungry and wanted something to eat.

“I’ve been doing that since I was in college,” Berry said. “That’s just something I learned from my parents. They always talked about how blessed you are and always taking other people in consideration.”

The 28-year-old Berry went to a nearby restaurant to place a to-go order and delivered the food to the trio. A patron of the restaurant witness the event and posted a photo along with the story on Facebook.

“I asked them what they wanted, got it, brought it back,” Berry said. “One of the guys asked me to pray for him, so I just prayed for him.”

He said he’s done the same thing numerous times in the past.

“If you feel like doing a good deed, don’t second guess it, just go ahead do it,” Berry said. “Sometimes I just feel like doing a good deed and I just do it, I don’t think about it twice. That’s it.”

Receiving notoriety for the donation, however, seemingly makes Berry uncomfortable.

“I don’t do it for the attention,” Berry explained. “I don’t do none of this for the attention. I do it to better myself and just give back. That’s what you should do it for.”

Berry understands if others see inspiration from the gesture, even if he prefers to make such donations outside the limelight.

“If somebody looks at it and is like, ‘Hey, maybe I should help feed a homeless person today,’ or something like that, it’s cool, but I’m not doing it for the attention,” Berry said. “I just do it because I feel like that’s what you’re supposed to do when you got the chance.”
