KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs released wide receiver Mike Williams and safety Steve Brown, the team announced Wednesday evening.
The Chiefs signed Williams in April, hoping the veteran wide receiver could recapture the form that allowed him to post two 900-yard seasons in Tampa Bay before injuries cost him much of the last three seasons.
But Williams did not appear to make a significant impact in camp and played mostly with the second and third teams. He played just nine snaps against the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday.
Brown also signed with the Chiefs in April. Brown spent training camp in 2015 with the Houston Texans before his release Aug. 28. Three days later signed with the Giants, but was waived Sept. 7.
The 29-year-old Brown is a veteran of six NFL teams. Brown provided safety depth for the Chiefs, who are currently without Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry and lost safety Hussain Abdullah to retirement.
Brown played frequently early in training camp but appeared to drop behind several other young safeties on the roster. He played only 10 snaps versus the Rams.
The transactions leave the Chiefs with 88 players on the roster. Teams must cut down to 75 players before 3 p.m. central time Aug. 30.
