ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs opened training camp without linebackers Justin Houston and Tamba Hali.

The team placed both players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list prior to the camp’s first workout. They join running back Jamaal Charles, who was placed on the same list Tuesday. All three have reported for camp.

Houston is recovering from surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in February. Hali suffered from knee inflammation in 2015 and underwent a knee procedure in the offseason. Neither player participated in offseason workout programs or minicamp.

Head coach Andy Reid did not set a timetable for either player’s return.

“We’re just going to take it nice and slow with them and we’ll see how it works out,” Reid said. “They need to get into football shape. There will be a time in point when it’s right for that.

Dee Ford and Frank Zombo saw the bulk of the playing time with the first team defense in place of Houston and Hali.

Running back Spencer Ware also missed practice with an illness, Reid said.
