Tamba Hali undergoes surgery on right thumb, considered ‘day-to-day’

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs outside linebacker Tamba Hali had surgery Tuesday to repair a broken right thumb, head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder said Wednesday.

Hali sustained the injury at an unknown time during Week 15’s win over the Baltimore Ravens and dealt with swelling after the game.

An X-ray conducted Monday showed Hali suffered a fracture, leading to Tuesday’s surgery performed by Dr. Bruce Toby of the Kansas University Medical Center, according to Burkholder.

“He’s doing fine,” Burkholder said of Hali. “He has three little screws in his thumb.”

Burkholder said Hali is now in a splint and going through the rehabilitation process.

Coach Andy Reid didn’t rule Hali out for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

“We’ll just see how it goes,” Reid said. “Right now if you ask him, he’ll want to be out there playing. But let’s see what happens; let’s just take it day-by-day.”

Already without Justin Houston (knee), the Chiefs are likely to turn to Frank Zombo if Hali can’t play Sunday.
