KANSAS CITY, Mo. – San Diego Chargers safety Jahleel Addae’s crushing hit on Chiefs wide receiver Jeremy Maclin in Week 11 didn’t draw a penalty flag from the officials.
But the NFL paid attention to the helmet-to-helmet hit and penalized Addae in the pocket.
Addae was fined $23,152 for unnecessary roughness as a result of the play, a league spokesman on Friday informed ChiefsDigest.com and The Topeka Capital-Journal.
The specific play occurred in the third quarter after quarterback Alex Smith threw a short pass to Maclin coming across the middle of the field on first-and-10 at the Chiefs’ own 31-yard line.
The pass fell incomplete after Addae, who led with his helmet, leveled Maclin just under the chin, which snapped Maclin’s head back.

There was a flag on the play, but not for what appeared to be an easy call on Addae.
Chargers cornerback Patrick Robinson was called for defensive holding away from the play, and the Chiefs accepted the 5-yard infraction for a first down.
Maclin briefly left the field before returning to finish the contest, which the Chiefs won, 33-3.
