Chiefs’ Andy Reid welcomes “four good quarters of football” before business trip to England

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs are heading to England on Thursday evening, landing in London on Friday to play the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

They will land there after ending a five-game losing streak with a 23-13 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday. It was the best overall performance of the season for the Chiefs.

“It was four good quarters of football, which I don’t think we had gotten altogether throughout the season until yesterday,” coach Andy Reid said Monday.

If the now 2-5 Chiefs want to build any momentum on the victory they face an international trip, with a long plane flight, jet lag and very different circumstances.

And, Reid made it clear there is nothing about the Chiefs trip that could be described as a vacation.

It’s a business trip.

“We’re going over to play a good Lions football team,” Reid said. “It’s not a vacation, that’s not what this is. They can do that another time.

“I want to make sure we have maximum preparation right here and understand why we’re going there.”

That’s why the Chiefs are staying home and going through a normal on Monday through Thursday evening. Then, it’s a 7 p.m. departure and a nine-hour flight to London where they will arrive late Friday morning.

A workout is scheduled for that afternoon at Allianz Park, the home of the Saracens Rugby Football Club.

Any tours or tourist type stuff for the players?

“No, I’m not really into all of that,” Reid said.

The head coach had no updated information at the lunch hour on injuries, specifically three players that were held out of Sunday’s game: wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (concussion), defensive end Mike DeVito (concussion) and inside linebacker Ramik Wilson (ankle/knee.)
