Week 3: Friday injury report

Week 3: Friday injury report

Matt Derrick September 23, 2016

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs appear heading toward at least one more week without running back Jamaal Charles. The team listed Charles as doubtful for the second-straight game, making it unlikely he plays Sunday against the New York Jets at Arrowhead Stadium.

Coach Andy Reid said Charles look good in practice Friday, but wanted to consult the team’s athletic training staff before making a final determination on his status. Charles continues splitting practice time with the first-team offense and the scout team in practice.

“It was a pretty good week for him,” Reid said. “I thought he got a little bit better this week than he was last week.

The Jets listed wide receiver Brandon Marshall as questionable, meaning it is uncertain if he will play. Marshall practiced for the first this week in limited fashion on Friday.

The Chiefs will be without left guard Parker Ehinger, backup offensive lineman Jah Reid and linebacker Sam Barrington. All three are listed out for Sunday.

Zach Fulton is the likely starter at left guard in place of Ehinger. The team listed staring right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (ankle) as questionable, but Reid hoped he would be able to play.

“That’s truly a day-to-day thing,” Reid said “He did more today than he did the other day, it’s been that way the whole week. Those things are a bit unpredictable, but we’ll see how he does. I’m optimistic that he’s feeling better, that he’s making progress as he goes.”

Linebacker Tamba Hali did not practice Friday after working with the team Thursday. Reid called it nothing out of the ordinary; the team frequently rests the veteran Hali.

Cornerback Philip Gaines was Friday’s only new addition to the injury report. The team listed Gaines as limited in practice and questionable for Sunday’s game.

The cornerback appeared back to full form from knee surgery last season, but there was no immediate indication what caused the change in his status.
