KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Chiefs wide receiver Donnie Avery returned to the practice field Wednesday for the first time since undergoing a sports hernia procedure on Oct. 3.

Avery was observed going through stretching and warm-up drills during the portion of practice open to the media.

The Chiefs officially listed Avery as a limited participant.

Cornerback Chris Owens (knee) also put in a limited practice and could be on track to return to the lineup for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills.

“He’s close,” coach Andy Reid said. “He’ll take some snaps today, just taking that next step. He looked good the last couple of weeks. I think he’s anxious to see if he can test it even a little bit further.”

Outside linebacker Tamba Hali shows up as a limited participant with a knee injury.

The Chiefs list strong safety Eric Berry (ankle), cornerback Phillip Gaines (ankle, quad), running back Cyrus Gray (hand), wide receiver Junior Hemingway (hamstring) and tight end Travis Kelce (ribs) as full participants.

Cornerback Jamell Fleming (hamstring), linebacker Jerry Franklin (hamstring) and linebacker Josh Martin (hamstring, knee) did not practice.

Fleming and Martin suffered their respective injuries in Week 8 and did not play in Week 9. Franklin suffered his injury in Week 9.

Inside linebacker Joe Mays (wrist) was on the field during the portion of practice open to the media.

Reid said the Chiefs will “see how things go” with Mays, who remains on the injured reserve list with a designation for return.

“Let’s just take it up a notch and if it feels that way,” Reid said, “take it up a notch from what we did last week and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, the Bills list seven players on the initial injury report, including four wide receivers.

Rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins suffered a groin injury during Wednesday’s practice.

Running back Fred Jackson (groin) put in a limited practice.
