KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs are likely without rookie running back De’Anthony Thomas for Sunday’s season opener against the Tennessee Titans.
The Chiefs officially list Thomas (hamstring) as doubtful on Friday’s injury report.
But the designation isn’t a surprise considering what coach Andy Reid said during a post-practice media session two hours before the report’s release.
“De’Anthony did run on the treadmill and actually ran pretty fast,” Reid said. “He’s making progress. It’ll be a stretch for the game, we’ll just see how he does.”
With Thomas potentially sidelined, wide receiver Frankie Hammond Jr. is next in line as the punt returner.
“He did it in preseason and he’s been doing it out here,” Reid said of Hammond. “We’ve got a couple of guys, but that’s who would be the next man up.”
The Chiefs list cornerback Marcus Cooper (ankle) and backup center Eric Kush (shoulder) as questionable. Both were limited participants during Friday’s practice. Cooper missed Thursday’s practice.
The Chiefs list Eric Berry (heel), defensive end Mike DeVito (hand), linebacker Tamba Hali (knee), wide receiver Junior Hemingway (hip), wide receiver A.J. Jenkins (concussion), linebacker Josh Martin (quad), fullback Anthony Sherman (back), defensive lineman Vance Walker (hand), wide receiver Albert Wilson (ankle) and linebacker Frank Zombo (groin) as probable.
The Titans list running back Jackie Battle (shoulder) and quarterback Charlie Whitehurst (right finger) as probable. Defensive tackle Mike Martin (hamstring) is questionable.
