Travis Kelce Pledges Being “Better Teammate” After Scrapes in Practice

Travis Kelce Pledges Being “Better Teammate” After Scrapes in Practice

Matt Derrick July 29, 2023

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce tangled with cornerback Dicaprio Bootle during Friday’s practice, and another incident Saturday morning with linebacker Jack Cochrane prompted the All-Pro to pledge better behavior on the practice field.

After tussling with Bootle Friday, Kelce seemingly threw a punch at Cochrane during Saturday morning’s workout. The argument started after Kelce caught a red-zone pass from Patrick Mahomes in the back of the end zone, and Cochrane attempted to punch the ball from Kelce’s hands after the play.

Friday’s altercation with Bootle came after an extended sequence in which four defenders surrounded Kelce, and Bootle was at least the second player who attempted to punch the ball out of Kelce’s grasp.

Kelce took to social media after video of the conflict with Cochrane went viral.

Gotta be a better teammate gotta be a better leader… plain and simple

“Gotta be a better teammate gotta be a better leader… plain and simple,” Kelce wrote.

Head coach Andy Reid addressed the kerfuffle between Kelce and Bootle after Friday’s practice, but Kelce’s swing at Cochrane Saturday would certainly not with the coach’s approval.

“Fighting is a waste of time,” Reid said.” You get thrown out of games doing it, you get hurt out here doing it. But they’re going to jaw, it’s hot, humid, they’re going to jaw a little bit. Just as long as there are not punches thrown, we’re all right. They’re going to talk a little bit, that happens.”
