Travis Kelce Reiterates Plan to Play Football Until “the Wheels Fall Off,” No Timeframe for Retirement

Matt Derrick June 11, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — After an offseason working on his career as both an actor, a producer and a game show presenter, Travis Kelce made it clear Tuesday that he’s still first and foremost a football player, and it’s the job he still loves the most.

“I’m still a little kid when I come into this building, man,” Kelce said after Tuesday’s minicamp practice. “I know I’m 34 years old, about to be 35. But I have a love to do this right here in the middle of the heat in June. You know I love coming to work every single day and doing this.

“So I’m going to do it till the wheels fall off, and hopefully that doesn’t happen anytime soon,” he said.

It was a busy offseason indeed for Kelce, who filmed a role in the miniseries “Grotesquerie” produced by Ryan Murphy and will host the game show “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?” on Amazon Prime Video.

“I love playing in the NFL and this will always be my main focus,” Kelce said. “But outside of that, you know football ends for everybody so kind of dipping your toes in the water and seeing what you like and in different areas and different career fields, I think the offseason is the best chance you can get to try and explore that and set yourself up for after football.”

The Chiefs and Kelce agreed to a restructured contract as well during the offseason, which provided him $17 million in additional guaranteed money and will make him the league’s highest paid tight end tight with $34.25 million over the next two seasons. He’s signed through the 2025 campaign, at which he will be 36 years old, but says that’s not necessarily the end for him on the football field.

“You know, I really, I can’t put a timeframe on it, man,” Kelc said “I love coming to work every single day. Obviously I know that there’s opportunities outside of football for me.

“But I can definitely understand that it’s towards the end of the road than it is the beginning of it. And I just got to make sure I’m set up for after football as well.”
