Travis Kelce, Chris Jones Expect to Play for Chiefs vs. Jaguars in Week 2

Travis Kelce, Chris Jones Expect to Play for Chiefs vs. Jaguars in Week 2

Matt Derrick September 15, 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — With three days of practice this week under their belts, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid pronounced his pair of All-Pro stars, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones, should be ready to go when the club visits the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday.

“They did a good job, yeah,” Reid said after Friday’s practice. “As long as nothing happens there’ll be out there.”

Kelce is listed as questionable for the game while Jones carries no game-day designation. The Chiefs do have to make a transaction by Saturday afternoon to add Jones back to the 53-player. They currently hold a two-week roster exemption for Jones. that expires Sept. 25 but they can remove the exemption at any time.

Reid didn’t commit to any specific workload for either player. Kelce said it wasn’t fun dealing with his hyperextended knee less than 72 hours before the season opener against Detroit but added, “Hopefully that all is behind us.”

“Things are looking up,” Kelce said Wednesday on his New Heights podcast. “I feel a lot better than I did last week.”

Defensive lineman Mike Danna, who picked up a sack lined up in Jones’ customary position in the middle in Week 1 against Detroit, said he’s eager to add “that piece back to the puzzle” and get Jones back in the rotation.

“It is great, man,” Danna said. “He’s a character off the field. He’s a great guy, a great teammate, a leader in the room, somebody you can look to that has information that can help you. And on the field it’s great, it opens it up for everybody. You got another dynamic piece on the field that can make plays with the best of them, and it’s great to have him back.”

Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) did not practice Friday. Linebacker Nick Bolton was excused from the workout for personal reasons.
