Robert Tonyan, Clyde Edwards-Helaire Headline Chiefs’ Initial Practice Squad

Robert Tonyan, Clyde Edwards-Helaire Headline Chiefs’ Initial Practice Squad

Matt Derrick August 27, 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City’s initial practice squad is filled with familiar faces, including one player from the team’s past.

The Chiefs signed tight end Robert Tonyan to the practice squad in anticipation of promoting him to the active roster once Rashee Rice’s six-game suspension begins.

The club is also signing running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who was released by New Orleans after spending the 2024 season with the Saints. The 2020 first-round draft choice for the Chiefs spent the first five seasons of his NFL career in Kansas City.

Kansas City did not receive any players off waivers during the claiming deadline. They did, however, lose to players off waivers — linebacker Cam Jones and offensive tackle Esa Pole were both claimed by the New York Jets.

Edwards-Helaire played in two games for the Saints last season, rushing for 46 yards on 13 carries and catching three passes for 24 yards. He’s averaged 4.2 yards per carry in his career.

Including Tonyan, the Chiefs have signed 13 players to the practice squad who spent training camp with the club. That group includes No. 3 quarterback Chris Oladokun and two strong performers in Kansas City’s preseason finale against Chicago, wide receiver Jimmy Holiday and cornerback Kevin Knowles.

The club also addressed defensive tackle, re-signing veteran Marlon Tuipuloto and undrafted free agent Coziah Izzard. The team is also planning to sign former Detroit defensive tackle Broderic Martin, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit Football Network. The 26-year-old was a third-round selection (No. 96 overall) by the Lions in the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s played in five games during the past two seasons with four total tackles.

The Chiefs currently have 16 players committed to their practice squad. Once Tonyan is promoted to the active roster, the Chiefs will have two open spots on the practice squad.

Current Chiefs practice squad as of 3:30 p.m. CDT, Aug. 27:

  • QB Chris Oladokun
  • RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (yet to sign)
  • RB/FB Carson Steele
  • WR Hal Presley

  • DT Coziah Izzard
  • DT Broderic Martin (yet to sign)
