KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs wide receiver Justin Watson and cornerback Nazeeh Johnson exited training camp practice via a cart on Wednesday, yet both players appeared to have dodged major injury concerns.
Watson has a minor foot issue and is expected to return to action in a few days, a source tells Chiefs Digest. Johnson left practice for precautionary reasons after discomfort with his right now, as first reported by the Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell.
Watson’s injury appeared the most severe as he was assisted to the sidelines after going down Wednesday before walking under his own power to the medical tent. He spent a lengthy time with athletic trainers in the medical tent before leaving practice.
The injury occurred as Watson caught a Patrick Mahomes pass during an 11-on-11 team period. Watson slid to the ground in making the reception and appeared to drag his left foot behind him, causing it to roll over as he went to the ground. Watson immediately grabbed his left foot and athletic trainers quickly approached him. However, tests have not revealed any long-term issues in the foot for Watson.
It wasn’t apparent what caused Johnson to enter the medical tent, but the right knee that athletic trainers examined is the same in which he tore his ACL last August. Johnson started the day at right cornerback opposite Trent McDuffie, the first time he started ahead of Johsua Williams during training camp.
The Chiefs have an off day Thursday before returning to St. Joseph for their first padded practice of training camp. While Watson is expected to miss at least a few days of practice, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Chiefs managed Johnson’s workload as the players put on the pads for the first time this season.
