KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to play Sunday against the Denver Broncos despite the onset of flu symptoms on Saturday.
The club added Mahomes to their injury report Sunday morning with an illness but did not give him a game-day designation. That means the team expects Mahomes to play. NFL rules require the club label a player as questionable, doubtful or out if there is any expectation a player may not play in a game.
Mahomes developed symptoms on Saturday with a fever, according to NFL Network.
The Chiefs will have only two quarterbacks active on Sunday with Mahomes and Blaine Gabbert. Chris Oladokun is their practice squad quarterback but he was not elevated for this week’s game.
The weather in Denver won’t be very conducive for a player battling the flu. Although snow is expected to finish before kickoff, a higher temperature of 28 degrees is forecast for Sunday. As of 11:45 a.m. central time, reports of 5 to 7 inches of snow has been reported across the city of Denver with isolated amounts of up to 9 inches in some locations.
