KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Chiefs were not awarded a compensatory draft pick for the upcoming NFL Draft in May, the league announced Monday in a news release.

The league determines the compensatory picks based on free agents lost from the previous season, in this case the 2013 season.
The maximum number of compensatory picks a team may receive is four with the highest selection spot being a third-round pick.
In accordance with the league rules on compensatory draft picks, “a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks,” according to the league.
The formula is “based on salary, playing time and postseason honors,” according to the league.
Additionally, not all free agents either signed or lost are covered by the formula.
The Chiefs in 2013 were active in free agency signing players, notably cornerback Sean Smith, tight end Anthony Fasano and defensive back Dunta Robinson, among others. However, the Chiefs didn’t lose a noteworthy player who signed elsewhere to a big contract.
Nevertheless, the Chiefs are potentially in good shape in 2015 to receive compensatory picks when considering the total players from the 2013 roster signing free-agent contracts elsewhere since the league’s calendar year kicked off on March 11.
Meanwhile, a total of 32 compensatory picks were awarded to 13 teams for this year’s draft.
The Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets received the maximum four picks each. The Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers and St. Louis Rams each received three picks. The Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers each received two picks.
Rounding out the teams receiving picks are the New England Patriots, New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers with one each.
From a history perspective going back to when the league started awarding compensatory draft picks in 1994, the Chiefs have been awarded a total of 15.
The Ravens have been awarded the most with 41 picks since 1994.
Notes: The Washington Redskins claimed defensive lineman Brandon Moore off waivers, according to Monday’s official NFL Transactions report … The Chiefs waived Moore on Friday.
