A total of 323 players, including 71 underclassmen, are invited to attend the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
The annual week-long draft prospect evaluation commences Tuesday, Feb. 17 and runs through Monday, Feb. 23 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Combine is one of the few offseason events where all 32 teams with general managers, coaches and scouts will be under one roof.
The event includes informal and formal interviews between players and teams, medical and psychological evaluations, measurements, various position drills and media sessions.
Of course, players spend weeks working out around the country at various training facilities specializing in Combine drills. While 40-yard dash times are fun to watch, a majority of teams lean to putting more stock on game film.
NFL teams must be selective when it comes to the formal interview process considering the number of attendees. Individual teams are allowed 60 total formal interviews, which are conducted within a 15-minute time limit for each session.
The formal interviews at the Combine are typically low-key, as evidenced by the Chiefs’ selections of outside linebacker Dee Ford and cornerback Phillip Gaines in the 2014 NFL Draft.
Both players were arguably surprise draft picks, but each player revealed they interviewed with the Chiefs in Indianapolis during their respective post-draft conference calls.
“I talked to them at the Combine,” Ford told reporters on May 8, 2014 after being selected in the first round as the 23rd overall player of the draft.
The Chiefs selected Gaines, who said “the Chiefs kind of kept it quiet” surrounding interest, in the third round as the 87th overall pick.
“I talked to them a little bit,” Gaines told Chiefs beat writers on May 9, 2014. “I talked to them at the Combine.”
