LIVE UPDATES: Chiefs, Ravens Kick Off Week 1 of 2024 NFL Season

Matt Derrick September 5, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs unveiled their Super Bowl banner and marked the occasion with former players and the Hunt family representing the team’s four world titles.

Representing Super Bowl IV was Hall of Famer linebacker Bobby Bell followed by offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz for Super Bowl LIV and quarterback Chad Henne for Super Bowl LVII. Club chairman and CEO Clark Hunt spoke on behalf of the Hunt family and the most recent championship, Super Bowl LVIII.

Moment of Silence

The Chiefs’ celebratory evening began with a somber moment as the team held a moment of silence for Lisa Lopez-Galvan, the Chiefs fan who lost her life in the shooting at the Super Bowl LVIII parade in February.

Following the moment of silence, both teams stood on their respective sidelines for the performance of “Lift Every Voice” by Tasha Cobbs Leonard.

Pregame Warmup Starters

The Chiefs wrapped up their 25-minute warmup period with no surprises on the defensive side of the ball. Jaylen Watson lined up opposite Trent McDuffie at cornerback, addressing the only outstanding question on that side of the ball.

Joining them with the starters were defensive ends George Karlaftis and Mike Danna, defensive tackles Chris Jones and Mike Pennel; linebackers Drue Tranquill, Nick Bolton and Leo Chenal; and safties Justin Reid and Bryan Cook.

Less crystal clear is who will start the game at receiver for the Chiefs. Xavier Worthy, Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster took the first rep during warmups but there’s not guarantee that’s the opening lineup. Other offensive starters at quarterback Patrick Mahomes, running back Isiah Pacheco, tight end Travis Kelce and the offensive line of Kingsley Suamataia, Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith and Jawaan Taylor.

Weather Delay Ends, 7:40 p.m. Kickoff

A weather delay due to thunderstorms around GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium is coming to an end and both teams should soon return to the field for warmups at 7 p.m. central time.

A 25-minute warmup period for players will be followed by 14 minutes for pregame ceremonies including performances of “Lift Every Voice” and the national anthem, the coin flip, team introductions and the championship ceremony.

League officials plan for the revised kickoff at 7:39 p.m.

Rain, Lightning Delays Warmups

Weather could have an impact on Thursday night’s game as rain moved into GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium about 70 minutes before kickoff.

Less than 10 minutes later the field was cleared of players after a lightning strike north of the stadium. A delay of the startup of warmups for both teams and pregame ceremonies was expected to last as much as 20-30 minutes but as of 6:43 p.m. there is no exact timeline for a return to the field. Warmups were scheduled to begin at 6:20 p.m.

Fans have also been directed to make their way to the concourses. The temperature dropped from 90 to 66 during the storm.

Kickoff ws scheduled for 7:22 p.m. League officials hope to kickoff as close to the original time as possible. Some pregame activities including the banner raising could be pushed until halftime.
