Linebackers Willie Gay, Darius Harris Active for Chiefs vs. Dolphins in Frankfurt

Linebackers Willie Gay, Darius Harris Active for Chiefs vs. Dolphins in Frankfurt

Matt Derrick November 5, 2023

Despite a lower back contusion that limited him during the week, Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay will play Sunday when the Chiefs take on the Miami Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany.

Both Gay and linebacker Darius Harris, who was signed Tuesday off the Las Vegas Raiders practice squad, are on the game-day roster. The club will be without starting middle linebacker Nick Bolton, who remains on injured reserve. Drue Tranquill will take his spot in the starting lineup. Harris is expected to be a major contributor on special teams but can fill in at all three linebacker positions if needed. The Chiefs will have six linebackers active Sunday along with Leo Chenal, Jack Cochrane and Cam Jones.

Chiefs’ inactive list against the Dolphins:

  • RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire
  • G/C Mike Caliendo
  • DE Malik Herring
  • DE BJ Thompson
  • DT Neil Farrell

Edwards-Helaire did not make the trip to Germany with the club due to an illness. The team elevated La’Mical Perine from the practice squad to backup Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon. McKinnon has been battling a sore groin but will play Sunday.

Wide receiver Richie James was a full participant in practice this week but will not play Sunday. He remains on injured reserve but still has two more weeks during which he can practice with the club before they must decide to return him to the active roster.

Both quarterback Patrick Mahomes and punter Tommy Townsend have hand injuries worth monitoring during Sunday’s game. Mahomes suffered lacerations on his non-throwing left hand last week against Denver and was wearing tape on at least two fingers during pregame warmups. Townsend was limited in practice on Wednesday due to an unspecified hand injury and also wore a bandage during the week.

The Dolphins will be without two starters Sunday — right guard Robert Hunt and safety Brandon Jones. But they are getting back left tackle Terron Armstead, who was activated from injured reserve Saturday, and center Connor Williams, who missed the last three games with a groin injury.

The Dolphins inactive list:

  • RG Robert Hunt
  • S Brandon Jones
  • QB Skylar Thompson (emergency third quarterback)
  • WR Robbie Rosen
  • CB Kelvin Joseph
