Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio Headline Chiefs’ Initial Practice Squad for 2024 Campaign

Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio Headline Chiefs’ Initial Practice Squad for 2024 Campaign

Matt Derrick August 28, 2024

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs signed 15 players to their 16-player practice squad Wednesday, all of whom were with the club during training camp and the preseason.

Three wide receivers headline the list with Justyn Ross, Nikko Remigio and Montrell Washington staying in the organization. The team also signed Chukwuebuka Godrick to the practice squad with an International Player exemption. Godrick is an additional 17th player on the practice squad.

Four members of the squad are undrafted rookie free agents. The additional 12 members are veterans in their second season or more with the club. Here’s the complete list of members confirmed Wednesday:

  • RB Emani Bailey (undrafted rookie free agent, Texas Christian)
  • LB Swayze Bozeman (undrafted rookie free agent, Southern Mississippi)
  • S Deon Bush (8th year, 2022 free agent)
  • LB Cole Christiansen (1st year, 2022 free agent)
  • TE Baylor Cupp (undrafted rookie free agent, Texas Tech)
  • DT Matt Dickerson (6th year, 2023 free agent)
  • DT Neil Farrell (3rd year, 2023 trade)
  • OT Chukwuebuka Godrick (International exemption, Nigeria)
  • RB Keaontay Ingram (3rd year, 2023 free agent)
  • DE Truman Jones (1st year, 2023 college free agent)
  • DT Fabien Lovett (undrafted rookie free agent, Florida State)
  • OT Lucas Niang (4th year, 2020 third-round choice)
  • WR Nikko Remigio (1st year, 2023 college free agent)
  • WR Justyn Ross (3rd year, 2022 college free agent)
  • CB Keith Taylor (3rd year, 2023 free agent)
  • WR Montrell Washington (3rd year, 2023 free agent)

Linebacker Curtis Jacobs, and undrafted free agent from Penn State, was claimed by the New England Patriots.

Missing from the initial list is quarterback Bailey Zappe, who was waived by the New England Patriots and reportedly agreed to a practice squad contract with the Chiefs. The club does not typically confirm contracts, trades and other additions until the player arrives in Kansas City. Announcements are usually made after players pass their physicals and sign their contracts.

Also missing from the list are running back Louis Rees-Zammit, cornerback Kamal Hadden and quarterback Chris Oladokun. Rees-Zammit was expected to sign with the club’s practice squad if he cleared waivers, but he has reportedly opted to sign with Jacksonville’s practice squad. Hadden, the club’s sixth-round selection in this year’s draft, was the only member of the Chiefs’ 2024 draft class not retained by the club. Oladokun spent the past two seasons with the Chiefs as a practice squad and scout team quarterback but the club opted for Zappe as their No. 3 signal caller instead.

Here’s the complete list of players let go by Kanas City who cleared waivers and became free agents on Wednesday who did not sign with the practice squad:

  • CB Miles Battle
  • QB Ian Book
  • CB Ekow Boye-Doe
  • WR Phillip Brooks
  • DE Owen Carney
  • DT Alex Gubner
  • CB Kamal Hadden
  • WR Jaaron Hayek
  • CB Kelvin Joseph
  • OL Griffin McDowell
  • DB D.J. Miller
  • QB Chris Oladokun
  • LS Randen Plattner
  • WR Cornell Powell
  • RB Deneric Prince
  • RB Louis Rees-Zammit
  • WR Kyle Sheets
  • TE Geor’quarius Spivey
  • WR Kadarius Toney
  • OL Nick Torres

In addition to the practicer squad signings, the Chiefs claimed Dallas cornerback Eric Scott off waivers. The team made room for Scott by waiving cornerback Nic Jones.

The club also reportedly agreed to terms with free agent running back Samaje Perine, who spent the past season with Denver. The Chiefs have yet to confirm the signing nor announce a corresponding roster move.
