RB Isiah Pacheco, S Mike Edwards Report with Rookies, Quarterbacks at Chiefs Training Camp

RB Isiah Pacheco, S Mike Edwards Report with Rookies, Quarterbacks at Chiefs Training Camp

Matt Derrick July 19, 2023

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — One day after head coach Andy Reid suggested Isiah Pacheco might be delayed in his training camp debut, the starting running back made a spirited appearance on the first day of workouts that removed any doubts about his offseason recovery.

Pacheco was all smiles Wednesday as he arrived at the practice fields on the campus of Missouri Western State University. He along with safety Mike Edwards (hamstring) reported early to camp along with the club’s rookies and quarterbacks. Injured players who were not full participants during the third phase of offseason workouts and the mandatory minicamp in June are eligible to report to camp before the full squad arrives on Friday.

The second-year running back showed no signs of rust after sitting out the offseason program after surgeries to repair a broken bone in his hand and a torn labrum in his shoulder. Pacheco did wear a non-contact yellow jersey during practice but took the majority of the work as the No. 1 running back. The Chiefs were not required to provide an injury report after practice.

Second-round receiver Rashee Rice said Pacheco delivered an emotional boost at Wednesday’s practice.

“It was great just because during OTAs, I know that he wanted to be out there a lot,” Rice said. “So him running down the hill and being ready to even just do the warm-up, like he moving as fast as he can in the warmup, and we could just tell he’s excited to be on the field right now.”

Defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton, who is returning from a torn ACL that ended his season last October, also reported to camp early. He worked on the sidelines with athletic trainers during practice and was the last player on the field working out after practice. The Chiefs Wednesday officially placed him on the physically unable to perform list.
