ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Chiefs wide receiver Hollywood Brown returned Sunday to Kansas City where he’s beginning the road to recovery after suffering a dislocated clavicle during the team’s preseason loss to Jacksonville Sunday night.
Medical staff in a Jacksonville hospital were able to successfully reduce Brown’s dislocated posterior sternoclavicular joint, according to head coach Andy Reid.
“They were able to get the joint back into place without surgery, which is a positive,” Reid said. “And then we’ll just see on the recovery.”
Fellow receiver Xavier Worthy said he checked in with his teammate after the game Saturday.
“I think he’s in pretty good spirits,” Worthy said. “He’s just looking to come back and get back ready to work.”
Reid didn’t rule out the possibility that Brown could return in time for the team’s season opener against Baltimore on Sept. 5. When Tyreek Hill suffered a similar injury in 2019, he missed four games and went 35 days between games. There are 26 days between Brown’s injury and the season opener.
“We’ll see. We’ll see how that goes.”
In the meantime, Reid said he doesn’t plan any adjustments to the offense without Brown in the lineup.
“The positive there is that he’s going to be back,” Reid explained. “But without him in there, his experience and that in the league — we’ve also got other guys that can step in and play. We’ll be okay there. It’s just, we’re pulling for him to get back obviously.”
Justin Reid, Nick Bolton Return
The Chiefs defense received good news Monday morning with the return of safety Justin Reid and linebacker Nick Bolton. Reid passed his physical and was removed from the non-football injury list while Bolton returned to action from an elbow injury. Bolton wore a bulky padding and wrap on his left elbow during practice. Both players took part in walkthroughs but did not participate in any full team periods.
“We’ll just see how they made out through this,” Reid said.
All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones remained out Monday while nursing a shoulder injury sustained in practice last week. He watched from the sidelines along with offensive tackle Wanya Morris, who Reid revealed sustained a bone bruise last week.
“Those are pretty painful things, but he’s working. He’s working through that,” Reid said.
In addition to Brown, Jones and Morris, also missing practice Monday were safety Bryan Cook (personal), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness), wide receiver Jaaron Hayek (shoulder) and offensive lineman McKade Mettauer. Defensive end Charles Omenihu remains on the physically unable to perform list while fellow edge rusher B.J. Thompson is on the non-football injury list.
Mettauer suffered an MCL tear in his knee against Jacksonville but Reid surgery was not expected to be required.
“We’ll just see how he does here in the next few days, how that thing works out. It might be longer than that, but we’ll see.”
