KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Chiefs and Bengals finished the first quarter tied 3-3 but the momentum swung significantly toward the Bengals on the penultimate play of the period when Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Cincinnati linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither.
Mahomes tried to thread the need over the linebacker to Travis Kelce, and either didn’t see Davis-Gaither or miscalculated his ability to get his hands on the ball. Davis-Gaither intercepted the ball at the 43 and returned it 12 yards to the Kansas City 31, setting the Bengals up with a short field.
Butker’s Range
Kicker Harrison Buutker showed plenty of length during pregame warmups, demonstrating a range of more than 60 yards going both directions.
Kicking to the east (left to right on TV cameras) Butker missed just short and left from 72 yards. He connected kicking to the west from 59 yards with ease.
Winds at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday afternoon are listed out of east/southeast at 8 miles per hour but the flags atop the stadium occasionally fall limp. As normal, the wind swirls at field level with the flags atop the goalposts generally going in the opposite direction and periodically showing no breeze at all.
Inactive List
The Chiefs have a short inactive list of just four players after sending wide receiver Hollywood Brown to the inactive list. The club will have the same six receivers active that they did in Week 1: Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson, Mecole Hardman and Skyy Moore.
Kansas City’s inactive list:
- G/C C.J. Hanson
- OT Ethan Driskell
- DE Cameron Thomas
- DT Marlon Tuipulotu
Thomas and Tuipulotu on the inactive list leave the Chiefs with just eight defensive linemen. It’s been 10 days since they played 80 snaps against Baltimore in Week 1, but with temperatures in the 80s on Sunday depth could become an issue if the Bengals control the clock and possession
Cincinnati’s inactive list:
- WR Tee Higgins
- TE Tanner McLachlan
- OT Amarius Mims
- DE Cedric Johnson
- DT Kris Jenkins
The absence of Higgins again leaves quarterback Joe Burrow without one of his most important offensive weapons.
