KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The first round of cuts arrived Monday morning ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.
The Chiefs cut wide receiver Deon Anthony, defensive lineman Jarius Campbell, defensive lineman Jermelle Cudjo, wide receiver Weston Dressler, offensive lineman Otis Hudson, wide receiver Jerrell Jackson, cornerback Brandon Jones, cornerback Vernon Kearney, safety Jerron McMillian, tight end Adam Schiltz and wide receiver Darryl Surgent.
Dressler, a former Canadian Football League star, signed a free-agent contract with the Chiefs in February after spending six years with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
While he enjoyed success during offseason workouts in shorts and helmet, Dressler couldn’t sustain performances in training camp once the pads came on. He saw limited action in the three preseason games.
Jones, a former San Diego Charger, signed with the Chiefs shortly after the Chargers signed Brandon Flowers, whom the Chiefs released on June 13.
Kearney spent the 2013 season on the Chiefs practice squad.
Also of note are Jackson, who played collegiately at Missouri, and McMillian, whose departure opens the door for rookie Daniel Sorensen to start the regular season as strong safety Eric Berry’s primary backup.
Sorensen started all three preseason games in place of Berry, who is dealing with a right heel injury.
The Chiefs also placed defensive back Sanders Commings on season-ending injured reserve. The second-year pro underwent ankle surgery during training camp and is also recovering from a fractured fibula.
This marks the second straight season Commings starts the season on injured reserve. The former Georgia Bulldog started the 2013 on injured reserve with a designation to return.
The Chiefs currently sit at 78 players on the roster with Monday morning’s moves. The team must be at the league-mandated 75 players by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
