Five Chiefs Players Not Practicing Wednesday, WR Richie James Sidelined with Knee Injury

Five Chiefs Players Not Practicing Wednesday, WR Richie James Sidelined with Knee Injury

Matt Derrick September 20, 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Five Chiefs players were sidelined Wednesday afternoon as the club began preparation to host the Chicago Bears Sunday.

The only injury that appears to be a long-term issue involves wide receiver Ritchie James, who is dealing with an MCL injury in his knee, according to head coach Andy Reid.

“These guys, most of them are just day to day,” Reid said after the team’s walkthrough on Wednesday. “Richie might be a little bit longer possibly. The other ones are day-to-day.”

Also not practicing Wednesday were running back Isiah Pacheco (hamstring contusion), receiver Kadarius Toney (sprained toe) and linebackers Nick Bolton (ankle) and Willie Gay (quad contusion). Reid said Bolton and Gay participated in the walkthrough Wednesday morning but were not expected to take part in the afternoon practice. Gay and Pacheco were spectators on the sideline during the portion of practice open to the media.

Toney played through the toe injury during the team’s Week 2 win over Jacksonville. Bolton and Gay both briefly exited the contest but later returned to action.

Tight end Travis Kelce was not listed on the injury report, meaning he was a full participant. Neither was defensive tackle Chris Jones, who was limited during this return last week. Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed (knee) was the only player listed as limited on Wednesday.

Cornerback Nic Jones (hand) remains on the report as a full participant. Right tackle Jawaan Taylor and wide receiver Justin Watson (ankle) were the only other new additions but are listed as full participants.

DT Tershawn Wharton (knee) is also no longer listed on the injury report.

The Bears had a short injury report on Wednesday but suffered a significant loss with left tackle Braxton Jones landing on injured reserve. His likely replacement is former Missouri tackle Larry Borom, who started 17 games at right tackle for the club over the past two seasons. This year’s first-round draft pick, Darnell Wright, will start at right tackle against the Chiefs.
