Chiefs WR Justyn Ross Placed on Commissioner Exempt List

Chiefs WR Justyn Ross Placed on Commissioner Exempt List

Matt Derrick October 27, 2023

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The NFL placed Justyn Ross on the commissioner exempt list on Friday following his arrest Monday on misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and criminal damage.

Players on the commissioner exempt list cannot practice, play in games, or attend games. Ross also will not count toward the 53-player roster limit while on the list. Ross was released on a $2,500 bond on Tuesday and practiced with the Chiefs on Wednesday and Thursday.

Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday the club was “taking in all of the information” before making a decision regarding the status of Ross with the club.

“All the situations are different, so obviously the law enforcement part of it, you listen to the real details of what went on and then we keep open communication with (General Manager) Brett (Veach), myself and our people that deal with the law enforcement,” Reid said. “Then, we make the final decision from there.”

The NFL’s statement on Ross did not indicate how long he would be on the list or if the league has launched an investigation into Monday’s incident.

Former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt was placed on the commissioner exempt list during the 2019 season following the release of a security video showing an incident in which he was involved. The club released Hunt shortly after he was placed on the list.
